A sense of the place

Luxor Las Vegas opened on October 15, 1993, and its 30-story black glass pyramid, with a 106-foot sphinx out front, is still one of the easiest buildings on the Strip to recognize. It has about 4,400 rooms, and inside the pyramid the floors rise around a huge open atrium, served by inclined elevators that climb the corners at 39 degrees.

It sits on the South Strip between Mandalay Bay to the south and Excalibur to the north, and a free tram links all three. Allegiant Stadium is about a 12-minute walk away, so Luxor is busy on game and concert nights. VICI Properties owns the real estate and MGM Resorts runs the hotel.

Luxor is a value pick rather than a luxury one. It suits travelers who want a lower room rate, shows and a pool at the quieter south end of the Strip, and who don't mind riding or walking to the center Strip. It has changed a lot in 2026: the buffet closed in March, the main pool was rebuilt over the summer, and MGM now sells an all-inclusive package here.

What to look for

  • The Luxor Sky Beam: the beam of light from the top of the pyramid comes from xenon lamps focused by curved mirrors. Only about half of the 39 lamps have been lit since 2008, but it is still visible from far away on a clear night.

  • Blue Man Group: the long-running show has played its own theater at Luxor since 2015.

  • Carrot Top and FANTASY: Carrot Top's prop comedy has a contract running to 2030, and FANTASY is the resort's adults-only revue.

  • Exhibitions: Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition and BODIES… The Exhibition are both inside the resort. Check opening hours and prices before you go.

  • The Oasis pool: the main pool area reopened in July 2026 after a rebuild of the south pool, with more deck space, more ways into the water and more VIP seating.

  • HyperX Arena: an esports venue that opened in 2018, for gamers and tournament watchers.

  • The atrium: even if you don't stay, walk inside to look up at the pyramid's open interior, said to be the largest atrium in the world by volume.
